Great Giana Sisters Opening Theme - arranged by Mauve Park

Review by quinch, 13/12/2005

I'm afraid that the best thing that can be said about this remix is that's it's not inherently bad, and the experience of listening to it, if not the remix itself, is made so much worse by the feeling of disappointment it brings in just a few seconds after start.

It starts promising - immensely so, with a kind of children at playground background loop as the Giana Sisters theme opens with an eerie xylophone-ish instrument I could swear I've heard before in some horror movie or other, and it was a genuine surprise how well the theme fit to the creepy mood. Okay, I thought, it's a bit too fast, but I can live with that. And after a short while, it delivered… nothing. Nothing at all. About half a minute of eeriness, the melody shifts into the generic remix gear and stays there until the end. A little beat here, a little variation there, and we're done. There is one or two noteworthy points, likethe little twist around 1:23, but it's not nearly enough to pull it out of mediocrity; it's briefly promising, but it doesn't last.

Don't get offended Ai, but you need to improve progression level with this one. Try to put more life into this, which actually is also a remix of a few 4ch tunes by Extend (Amiga).

Green Beret (We Shall Never Surrender) - arranged by Hazel

Review by tdj, 07/12/2005

What an amazing piece! Just makes me want to lean back and remember WW2, especially the break with the samples of war, and the speech by Churchill. (hence the title of the tune). Love the way you mix between techno-like tune and almost a classical piece that could be played by an orchestra. This is on my playlist. Could have wished for a no-so-open ending. Maybe another part of a speech from WW2, slowly fading away?

Great arrangement - lovely voice and guitar.
I considder Gibs version to be more loyal towards the original SID version, than Mahoneys. Mahoneys interpretation is way more Jazzey.
Thanks Gibs.

Last Ninja End Credits - arranged by Markus Schneider

Review by feekzoid, 28/11/2005

Well I really like this, and not just because Markus's rendition of my Ninja IV intro theme is present and makes the hairs on the back of my neck rise 😊

I liked this so much I tried to persuade Markus to do (or collaborate) a Ninja themed soundtrack album to an imaginary movie.

Ignore the naysayers, in the great scheme of things the Ninja series has BARELY been done with orchestral instrumentation, and I for one would love to hear more.

Last Ninja End Credits - arranged by Markus Schneider

Review by gavin, 25/11/2005

First of all, technically this one is high-end, no doubt!
The quality of the orchestral intruments is just astonishing!
It starts very promisingly with a piece from last ninja 1, then changes into one of my personal favourites, the last ninja 3 level 1 tune from reyn ouwehand. But sadly the original character of this tune isnt captured very good in my opinion. Sounds like gladiator or a knights-movie… after that it changes back to a last ninja 1 tune i think, not sure… and this one now sounds like the score to a cowboy film. At the end it changes again to a last ninja 2 tune which also does not fit the mood of the original piece. For my personal taste its just too turgid, too much of everything. For me, musically theres no straight line…
So, sorry, i just cant share the enthusiasm of most others… i personally think markus should have concentrated on just remixing one tune. This would have been great!!

Ghouls'n Ghosts Title Screen - arranged by Miguel F Ettema

Review by monty_mole, 25/11/2005

Ghouls N Ghosts is one of my absolute favourit's sid's. I think Tim Follin did a ungrateful job with his absolute brilliant music for Ghouls N Ghosts. The game itself get not the conversion which was it worth so the game stand in the shadow of his great prequel Ghosts N Goblins.
I think that's the reason why the music itself is not so populare as the Ghosts N Goblins tune from Mark Cooksey. I think it's great that someone have arranged this underrated tune.

The remix self is absolute brilliant. It comes near to the original sid but sounds technical more spectacular. The sound itself sounds a little like an old B-Movie. The atmosphere is great with the howling and screaming at the beginning of the song. I love it.

Absolutly great work.

The Recovery - arranged by Glyn R Brown

Review by Tomsk, 20/11/2005

Errm, I don't know how to put this, but I'm not too keen on this. It's pretty good in places, but I don't think there's a great deal to the original tune - and hence an strange choice of SID to attempt to remix.
I always like to give tunes a 'spin cycle' in the car (i. e. hear them quite a few times) before writing a review, and all of Glyns previous work has blown me away. However, despite the excellent qulaity of samples I still found this remix quite standard up until about 4:40 when there seems to be an injection that brings it to life.
The guitar at 1:37 for example is just so plain and boring. I could predict the notes before they were played. There's none of the 'instrument excitement' from previous mixes. It's nice to hear the mandarin sure, but it's not inspiring in the way Glyn normally introduces an instrument. I really do think the original has a lot to answer for, and I'm suprised Glyn saw anything in the SID
This was a hard review for me to write, and normally when I'm not fussed with a tune I don't bother, but I know Glyn pretty well and if he does read this I know he won't have a problem with this. Nice to see a new direction, but this particular tune is not for me.

Game Over - arranged by Westerling

Review by Tomsk, 20/11/2005

Wow! I really loved this remix - albeit slightly flawed as it is. Hyped up drums, brilliant sounds and a bit of SID pumped in there to add to the feeling. My only gripe is that after the brilliant opening (complete with blazing guitar and superb drums) and the superb way Westerling handles that awkward 'quiet' section of the original between 1:52 - 2:44 it all returns to being a bit average. None of the pumped up feeling that we were treated to at the start of the track. It just kind of returns to a pretty good remix of Gameover, and then fizzles out.
I still love this tune to bits though and have to say a huge well done to Westerling - I do hope you can see what I mean about the end part of the mix going a bit flat.

Review by gator, 15/11/2005

I really love this track. It's the best interpretation of the G G music yet. It's so funky and has an excellent trance feel while maintaining the slightly spooky sounds the theme is famous for. However I would have appreciated less of the original sound effects and they distract from the wonderful sound and feel the rest of the track creates. Kudos, my friend.

Rambo Loader (Rambo's Blue Monday Mix) - arranged by Tron

Review by Mayhem, 01/11/2005

It's the turn of the nice, short, sweet review here. Sometimes people can be just a little too analytical. Maybe it's because I'm just a listener and not a composer. Anyhows, does it sound good? Yes. Does the combination work? Yes. Does the switch to a minor chord work? Yes. Does it get better with every listen? Hell yes. Nuff said.

Suicide Express - arranged by Morten KORG

Review by gator, 01/11/2005

Meh, it was okay. Most of it reminded me of the opening theme for Escape from LA, actually. While it did effect a slow, sort of dangerous atmosphere I don't think it really took full advantage of Crowther's tune. With a lot more seriousness and perhaps an evil streak to it, this could have been a classic remix. Just average as it is tho. Sorry.

Rubicon (Main Titles) - arranged by Jan Morgenstern

Review by quinch, 15/10/2005

Let me start off by saying that Jan Morgenstern's Rubicon was a hair's breadth away from being deleted from my computer before I even finished listening to it. The beginning sounded rather unimpressive, opening up with an upbeat, but rather simplistic percussion rhythm, and the hit-and-run interjection of the melody didn't do wonders for my opinion either. And thus, as my finger was hovering over the Delete button, thinking this is another remix that was all cork and no pop, the song hit the minute-twenty mark, the main melody kicked in and the song took off like a cartoon coyote.

Once the song gets going, it *stays* going; it goes full out with the melody, background instruments and percussion, sometimes one yielding territory to the other two, such as the solo between 1:55 and 2:26 marks, but altough the intensity of the song varies from one part to another, it doesn't, at any point, fade. The final conclusion is that, with a masterful use of both the instruments and original melody, and enough flourish and improvisation to rise the original while staying true to it, this is a tone well worth listening until the end.

Just remember not to set Winamp to loop. Trust me on that one.

Thanatos (Drachensaat Mix) - arranged by Voidshaper

Oh, what an excellent remake of a real classic (at least for me…). I was really sceptical about this one with the original being such a beautiful and fragile song, but you've nailed it almost perfectly. Yes, almost… there's a couple of things I'd change on the sound and the arrangement, but that's of course just a matter of opinion. Very good work, thank you for this! 😊

Spellbound (Remiximus) - arranged by deVilhoOD

Review by winc, 08/10/2005

Wow… I didn't like the original SID and must say you totally blew me away with this remix. The original tune is there, even the original feel, but you just do so much with the instruments and the mix!

The introduction is… perfect! A great way to start this piece, and moving it from a typical 4/4 drum beat into the march feel was very well done! The only thing about the intro I would have liked a little more was a slighty long cymbal draw, it feels to… rushed. The addition of the thunder was… well done.

Sometimes there is a instrument or two which seem to have just popped out of nowhere feeling like it is a mistake. A perfect example if what sounds like a flute off the left channel, which happens to pop up. 29seconds,. 40seconds, and 1.39secds - and a few times through out the piece.

The only other thing I would have probably added to the introduction to just add something more to the overall impressive feel would have been a little more to the strings - just playing the chords left it slighty empty where it is begging for some high pitch strings to bring you into the piece. A few 7ths and sust2nds would have helped in my opinion.

Overall this piece shows a lot of really great work, and bar the few areas where our technical differences appear, this is a piece of work that really honors and improves upon the original.

Lord of the Rings - arranged by Markus Schneider

Review by winc, 08/10/2005

The piece starts of really wonderfully, however is damaged by clicks in the tracks which shouldn't be there - I'm not sure if it is Strings you are using or just a bad compression of the mix. The problem is these clicks go through the whole piece, and do bring the overall enjoyment of this piece down a lot.

I feel that you're watched Lord of the Rings a lot! 😊 This certainly has a feel of the movies more so than the original piece. Now not saying that is a bad thing, since the original piece is very boring and you have taken it and made it into a epic intro to what could be a great story.

If you were after a theme music style of the type like Conan and Lord of the Rings Movies you have certainly done that in spades, and if there wasn't those nasty clicks and pops in the track it would certainly be in my movie soundtrack listening group.

The only other thing that I feel decreases my overall score of this is some of the instruments you used needed something more to them to make them more Believable. Many of the brass have that On/Off feel to it you get with Synth's, and this could have been improved by adding more effects to each of the notes to make them feel different to each other (then just volume and pitch)

Having heard your pieces before, I feel in this one you could have done a lot better, and a rushed feel to the mastering of this piece hurts it. But, the technical knowledge you have in mixing an orchestral piece is beyond reproach and certainly shows in this remix. If there was a real orchestra playing this, it would be near on perfect!

Rupert and the ice castle (Latin Wonderland mix) - arranged by Chronberg

Review by winc, 08/10/2005

This certainly far outdoes the original piece - this remix has a really mellow feel to it which just is prefect for this piece. The mixture of the instruments and the whole arrangement of the piece is just great.

I love the piano playing - well done and very nice addition to the whole piece.

If there was anything to say that I didn't like was in fact the ending - it felt too quick and screamed for a repeat of the piano to come back for its last show, and then to fade out from there - or ending with the piano included. In the way you ended it… I felt like you had almost cut it off and left me wanting more.

Overall however a wonderfully nice remix of what I thought was a very boring original SID - great work!

1942 (Orchestral) - arranged by Miguel F Ettema

Review by winc, 08/10/2005

COME ONE AND ALL TO WATCH THE MATCHING BAND!

This remake of a classic c64 game (if not a classic arcade game!) is just perfect! You are left with the feeling of… why has it taken so long to hear something like this?!

You feel that you need to have a band play this, and if it wasn't for the synth feel to some of the instruments used, this would be a winner at any matching band competation.

The part where the flute takes over by itself was one of my favourite points, and the mixing of the whole track is well done, almost nothing to fault there as you can hear all the tracks well (and boy it sounds great on headphones!) In fact the only thing I can fault is the way some of the tracks sound synth and that is a very hard one to prevent especially if you are using synth's.

Overall a great classical piece that really does the original honour!

I certainly can't wait to hear your next piece!

Game Over - arranged by Westerling

Review by winc, 08/10/2005

Okay -… I hated the original track for this sid - I just found it really wasn't put together right, and in essence felt there was always something missing. Also it sounded like so many other tunes of this period where people tried to do something with the C64 that shouldn't be done (pretend it was a guitar).

Now you have done what I believe the original artist wanted. This piece has a great guitar feel to it, and certainly you pull off what the original SID doesn't. The mix you do here is really smooth in most of the places, then you do hit a break in 2.45 where I feel… well it just seems to have lost that real feel to it and has gone very fake. I certainly feel it weakened the piece over all. I just feel that maybe there was a better way to pull this break off, in a way that kept it mixed together with the original start.

But in saying that, your start just really makes up for this songs weak poiints - it is well played, well put together and well mixed. If you ever plan on doing a rearrangement of this piece, improving the end would in my opinion make this one of the better rock remixes of the year.

Heartland (Tranciano remix) - arranged by Chronberg

Review by winc, 08/10/2005

This is one of those pieces that you just keep going back to listen to over and over (so far 10 counts of playing in a row!) and the reason for that is a feel good feeling you get when listening to it - the instruments and voices used in the piece, along with really great piano playing in parts just keeps you wanting to listening to it.

It is not really techno while has a feel of it - meaning that in this remix there is more than just a techno remix of the original. This has some really fun parts in it that make you smile, and others that just make you want to drift off and follow where the creator wants.

A really nice piece which certainly improves on the original in my opinion.

There are parts in the song where I feel the bass, and the piano could do with a little boost in volume, because the drums and mixing can drown them out - but over all the tehcnical production of this piece is great!

Over all a OUTSTANDING piece!
