What it's trying to be is a moody 80s pop ballad. What it ended up being is a poorly instrumented wannabe. I think the other commenters are right: softer, more reverberated drums would help a lot.
Dont know whether bigger drums would have placed this in the realms of pastiche but thats a matter of taste it works as it is for me
