End Sequence (Thanatos) - arranged by Eivind Sommersten

Review by tim_forsyth, 06/11/2023

Let me just start by saying that I thought Glyn R Brown was behind this tremendous remix. You’ve outdone yourself Eivind, and then some. A short but emotional original by DRAX has been elevated to new heights. Expertly broken down into 3 parts, the initial introduction with a fantastic brass lead guides you towards an unexpected and spellbinding vocal section that leaves a lasting impression. When the percussion with its heft and weight joins in with that guitar solo, I was carried away. With the choir chants at the end, I wanted more but realised we had reached our 4 minute limit. The mix is exceptional, everything is perfectly balanced, with depth, lightness and is epic when it needs to be without sounding overbearing. I was blown away when I heard it for the first time and it keeps delivering on (many) repeated listens. For a guy that commits awesome acts of funk on us RKO listeners, it is clear you are capable of so much more. Just amazing.

Angel Face - Back to Basics Remix - arranged by Oxx

Review by tim_forsyth, 24/11/2022

I enjoyed this, the countdown and beats remind me of the game Rez. Extra red points for making the majority of the patches and your mix has a good amount of weight and punch to it. I used my washing machine in a remix once, but I think you should get an award in the new year for most novel application of a household appliance in a remix.

Boulder Dash - Amusement Park Loudspeaker Remix - arranged by Oxx

Review by tim_forsyth, 01/06/2022

Great idea to use the original as a foundation for an EDM track, I think your additions work nicely here. The mix is really well balanced and nice fx used throughout. The low end is a little lacking, which is hard to get right but I appreciate the effort you must have gone to weave such a short tune into a 3 minute piece. Good job!

Space Harrier (NAPAPBWPMIF Mix) - arranged by Dr Future

Review by tim_forsyth, 10/05/2022

Your remix is full energy and there’s a nice sense of urgency plus you own those Tom fills. Your guitar playing is fantastic and I love the subtle bits of instrumentation smattered throughout. It’s such a well made remix that 2 things really stick out. The attack on the string lead is a bit too long and if my ears didn’t deceive me, there’s a late snare hit in the middle section. But these are minor things as the overall slight disco vibe is wonderful.

Smile to the Sky - arranged by Rock & JLD

Review by tim_forsyth, 03/05/2022

For me, this is not only the standout remix of 2022, it is perhaps one of the best over the past 5 years or more, or maybe of all time. Whenever I find myself thinking about this tune, I actively look forward to giving it just one more listen. This is not just a testament to how good the original SID, which I discovered thanks to this remix, but because the energy, performance and mix absolutely nails the emotion and uplifting vibe of the original. The lead solo after the 5 minute mark impossibly mimics the astonishing and equally impossible SID solo, there are bass notes and guitars in the mix that appear to have been stolen from the future and at nearly 10 minutes, this remix never loses sight of its origins whilst keeping you engaged. This might be my most listened to remix of all time and for good reason. Astonishing work guys!

Remembering Impossible Mission - arranged by DashN

Review by tim_forsyth, 12/03/2022

I love the synthwave atmosphere and the drum programming is excellent. For me it’s evoking a kind of flashback documentary style and I like it. The only criticism would be the wild panning and what sound like a lot of haas stereo widening going on which confuses my brain a little. Otherwise, a great return and a surprising take on a game that I don’t remember having any music. Look forward to hearing what you do next.

Stranger in a Strange Land (Ensoniq Mix) - arranged by LaLa

Review by tim_forsyth, 02/12/2021

There is so much to love about this remix. It's densely packed with rhythms, synths, arpeggios, fat brass chords and harmonies. It's tickling all my nostalgia senses, it has this sound of the 80's that's hard to pin down, Moroder, Pop, Game shows, Huelsbeck? I kept thinking I was listening to a Chris Huelsbeck remix of Reyn. The drums are tightly programmed and there's never a dull moment, 16 bars of fun throughout. Amazing! Right, I'm off to download some RX5 samples…

The Last Ninja - The Wilderness - arranged by Johan Andersson

Wonderful remix. There’s an admirable amount of restraint here that keeps the whole track a consistent and enjoyable, letting you weave in your signature style while keeping the vibe of the original intact. I also think the mix on this track is one of your best, there’s a lot more instrumentation and it compliments the brass and guitar. How you manage to keep pushing out so many quality, well played remixes I have no idea. Good stuff!

Lightforce (2021 Edit) - arranged by Dr Future

Review by tim_forsyth, 26/10/2021

Red for me, partly because this is a great remix but mainly cause you've improved almost everything from your original. Guitar playing is more natural, especially the end lead solo, replacing some synths for guitar give is a more cohesive sound. Less reverb and boominess on the bridge, the thinned out pulse width synth sounds better plus the drums and toms sit better in the mix. Great work, these may be subtle changes but they make a big difference.

Savage Intro - arranged by Magical Sound Shower 64

Review by tim_forsyth, 26/05/2021

You’ve nailed that feel of a live band jamming on stage and you’ve built a head nodding groove. I particularly like the switch at the end to the bass player noodling around the notes. The mix feels a bit flat to me and the guitar solo is a little quiet plus the pads around the 2 minute mark jump in a bit unexpectedly, but I love the texture they bring. I’ve found myself coming back to this track many times this evening, fantastic work.

Stormlord (thunder mix) - arranged by Dj Space

Review by tim_forsyth, 25/05/2021

Love the intro, lots of texture and love given there and it gave me great expectations (nice use of the original samples) but I wasn't too keen on the pitch bending lead. Aside from that, there’s a lot to appreciate in this mix, great stuff.

Afterburner (High Energy Prog Mix) - arranged by Peter Clarke

Review by tim_forsyth, 05/05/2021

Another outstanding remix! You've done an amazing job of capturing that Sega spirit in the arrangement and instruments. Especially in my favourite section, the break down around 3:15, took me right back to stuffing coins in the arcades during the 80's.

Amaurote (Full Sci-Fi Horror Mix) - arranged by Martin Dodd

Review by tim_forsyth, 27/04/2021

For me, the first outstanding remix I heard in the anniversary compo. I love this, the creepy atmosphere, the carpenter vibes, from a creative point of view, this is full of ideas. The only minor issue I have is the loudness of the snare, it works but it’s a bit too in your face. I thought the please hang up and try again phrase at the end was a genius addition.

Way of the Exploding Fist (In Game music) - arranged by JB Xplodingfist

Review by tim_forsyth, 28/01/2021

I liked the synth patches you've used, which I thought gave it a strong start, but I was hoping this would take me on a journey somewhere. I think it needed to either build up to the drum section or settle into a groove using some more instrumentation / rhythm in the background.
