Captured - arranged by Monty

Review by tamaha, 06/08/2006

The rework on Captured is outstanding (used to play the game a lot and the tune becomes a bit heavy to assimilate during loger sessions) and keeps the atmosphere as it was originally intended, without boring you when repeated. The metallic and dark sound style is also excellently treated.

Rolands Ratrace (The quest for Jarre) - arranged by Traxer

Review by immacolata, 01/08/2006

A rare remix of the much under-appreciated Roland's Rat Race sid, it self being a nice cover of the tv show's theme. This remix suffers a bit from the clichéd synth intro. Takes the author about one and a half minute to tell us how much he likes Jarre.

Once the introductory lull is over, I do believe the song picks up. I have rewritten a bit of this review, because upon several listenings, I tend to favour the tune more. Only niggle I have here is the drum track. Not that it is bad but I found that the song worked very well on its melodical parts and synths, no need for any artifical sweetener in shape of a drum track.

The overall impression is therefore that the song is a fair job, but intros is perhaps something the author should work on, at least to make them shorter. I still think it beats the a capella version by a long shot. More Roland remixes, however, and the best roland remix of the lot.

Stormlord (Senecas Marble Pack Edit) - arranged by N-JOY

Review by omoroca, 26/07/2006

If I wasn't married myself, I'd envy N-Joy for being married with Simona. 😉

BTW, my wife said, this sounds like T. A. T. U. in Italian, great work! Give us more of that!!!

Gods Intro DaxxTRS Remix - arranged by daXX offline

Review by dream_19, 23/07/2006

At first I must admit, that this Tune was my favourite Amiga-Tune for years. So I was quite happy to see that finally someone made a new Remix. It was about time - and it's goood.

Richard Joseph's Original was mindblasting - this remix caches the epic style of the original tune and enhanced it. The echo of the GODS-Castle wide the rememberance, pumping beats and bass takes you forward through the castle.

I love that Remix. It's definitely the best one ever made of this Masterpiece. The only thing I miss is some kind of twist. But I don't want to be pedantic - great work!

Bubble Bobble (Live!) - arranged by Hampshire Regional High School

Review by hillsman, 20/07/2006

Brilliant! Absolutely love this! Wonder who's in the audience as they seem to be loving it too! Main theme accurately reproduced with lots of humour - then we have the invincibility music (which gets a big cheer) followed by the New Zealand story ingame music 😊 Great stuff and a lot of fun!!

Delta Ingame ('97 XG mix) - arranged by Chris Abbott

Review by hillsman, 06/07/2006

Obviously an arrangement rather than a remix, but when we're talking about Delta's in-game epic then this is definitely a good thing! I was blown away when I heard Hubbard's masterpiece almost 20 (!!) years ago and no SID is listened to more.

Chris' arrangement re-produces the original with impressive accuracy and is more than good enough to warrant repeated listening. My main complaint? A lack of power and impact during the opening minutes, particularly the baseline. Addressing this would make it perfect for me.

Love the string section at the end though - great arrangement overall!

Bubble Bobble (Live!) - arranged by Hampshire Regional High School

Review by wishbone, 06/07/2006

Now this is damn funny. I wonder how it got made. Maybe the band conductor is a C64 fan. This is the kind of stuff that just doesn't happen, because getting that many ordinary people (not that we C64 fans are all complete freaks) to play C64 tunes is all but impossible.

One thing noone have mentioned is that this is not just a remix of Bubble Bobble, but also of New Zealand Story. I think this is important since it is the ONLY New Zealand Story remix at RKO, although hard to find since all its information relates to Bubble Bobble only.

Judgment Day (2005) - arranged by XxDUSTYxX

Review by cyphax, 13/06/2006

Unfortunately I didn't hear the original and I can't find what it is so I'm gonna have to do without. So how does this song do all by itself? Simply put; great! In Dusty's previous effort, Echoing, I thought the choice of instruments/samples wasn't as good as it could've been. The same does not apply for this remix. Dusty's picks are good alltogether and the remix sounds very pleasant.

I can understand why one might think the song lacks variation but quite possibly the original didn't have any more variation either, in which case I can't blame Dusty at all.

To sum it up a little I can't really seem to find anything wrong with this, I simply really like it a lot. 😊

Commando - arranged by Instant Remedy

Outstanding! This is how a remake should be. The original Sid with a new beat. This tune keeps the original Commando feeling alive.

Spellbound ('97 XG Mix) - arranged by Chris Abbott

Review by cosmic_gerbil, 04/06/2006

This is one of my two favourite remixes of spellbound. It captures the atmosphere of the original SID perfectly. I love the way the song builds up, the brass section is groovy and I especially love the dark, dramatic bit at the end.

R-Type Title (Re-make) - arranged by Tn-1

Review by gator, 23/05/2006

An R-Type remix is always welcome, bit this one is kinda bland and a bit uneven. Don't get me wrong, it does have some cool moments but I think you need to re-do the whole track and make the good parts stronger and erase the rest.

Alleykat - arranged by Romeo Knight

Review by OJ Oscillation, 14/05/2006

The 1st part comes with a synthetic sound which fit the tune quite well, whereat the rhythm is flowing like kinda odd and interesting. after that the break with the windows sound-gimmick prepares the tune for a very solid rock number. romeo pulls the right stunt with his guitar and squeezes the essence out of the original sid with his superb skills. there's nothing more to say then: hold ya nuts and let's rock!

Space Harrier (Cooksley vs Bach Mix) - arranged by Karl R Pettersen

Review by thedownandout, 29/04/2006

I can't understand why this tune just gets average reviews. I think it's awesome, a mix of baroque and rock that rivals the work of Muse and Bach. Put the two together and you have music to accompany you into outer space. Fly away into an LSD dream world… this will augment your emotions and make you feel inspired.

Wizball (piano version) - arranged by Chronberg

Review by thedownandout, 22/04/2006

This might be played in elevators on a distant planet in years to come. Full of pathos with sweeping segues from one style to another. I'd like to watch the triple Suns of planet Yaro set whilst listening to Chronblom's version of the Wizball theme before I die.

1942 (Orchestral) - arranged by Miguel F Ettema

Review by ncd, 18/04/2006

Great cover of an old classic. Managed to get hold of the tune the original SID was based on, and the arrangement in this remix is actually better than the original, especially since this cover incorporates the marvelous high-score sub-tune found it the game.

My only gripe, and this has been mentioned several times already, is the synth sound of some of the instruments. Down one point in technical merit, there. But listening to the arrangement, I'd be hard pressed to find a fault, so a full score in that department. The nostalgia is a dead given.

Someone should get this guy in touch with a real orchestra, that would be like christmas, summer holiday and my birthday all at once!

Great work, rock solid!

Combat Crazy - arranged by Ollas & Ziphoid

Review by DHS, 03/04/2006

Pro:
I like very much some parts of this remix: it's general '90s feeling, the strong orchestral part at the start (it really kicks power out of the loudspeakers), the mastering. Also, percussions (crashes, rockets, and so on) do a good job to movimentate the track.

Cons:
Pauses like the one at 01:45 don't work good, as they really push down all the hype work done before.
Also, i'm not fond of all the Vanguard lead going nuts starting at about 03:28 to the end (while the base is cool).

Overall, a very good mix, very well done on the technical side, with enough variations (even if somewhat i feel it to be a little undeveloped, expecially at the end, but maybe it's just me). If this is the welcome back after 10 years of inactivity, we can expect great things from Ziphoid in the future 😊

Review by gator, 02/04/2006

This is a kinda over-rated track. Sorry, it's just the way I feel. None of it sounds memorable or catchy and it doesn't develop in any interesting or dynamic way. It's actually a bit scattered and random.

Echoing (2002 Remix) - arranged by XxDUSTYxX

Review by cyphax, 30/03/2006

I have somewhat mixed feelings about this remix, but alltogether let's start off by saying that I really like it. What's not to like about this mix? I think the choice for the leads wasn't the best in most of the song, and the effect that's added to it here and there doesn't do it much good either. On the other hand there's this chorus or whatever that you first hear between 0:33 and 0:45 approx. that hits it just right and sounds very very good. Hence the mixed feeling thingie. The beat is simply fine, not particularly outstanding but it serves its purpose, like it should.
To sum things up: energetic and at times volumous remix that could be better with different leads but sounds good to excellent depending on which part of the song you're listening to.😉

Rambo (feat. Hanna Kappelin and Larsec) - arranged by Visa Röster

Review by LMan, 29/03/2006

Top notch vocals as usual by Visa Röster, and Larsec's style is distinctive in the arrangement. Technically, this piece is flawless.

On the other hand, I would really really appreciate if there were some lyrics for the melodies, and I would not mind if it was in english, or in swedish or any other language I don't understand; the point is, lyrics would add a lot of personality and texture to the singing.

Without doubt Visa Röster have the finest vocalists in the whole scene, it's a shame all we get to hear from them is Ooooohs and Aaaahs, if you know what I mean. 😊

Fist II (band in the rain - new mixdown) - arranged by Traxer

Review by LMan, 29/03/2006

Comparing the new mixdown to the old version, the rain effect has not effectively been turned down at all. In fact, it even sounds more present, with more treble in it.

The rain really should be barely audible after the intro, it totally distracts from the outstanding far eastern arrangement.

Skate or Die! - arranged by Ruiner

Review by Terrence Montgomery, 28/03/2006

I was trying to find a remix of the intro tune that was a good approximation of the original. This remix has a nice personal touch of the remixer, but in my opinion, respects the original feel.

Thus, this is my choice.
Thank you.

Zak McKracken (by Razor and the Scumettes) - arranged by plasm303

Review by legion_kreinak, 27/03/2006

I'm a long-time Plasm/Plams303 fan. I've searched high and low to find more songs by said artists, and I stumbled onto this site. Oddly, Zak McKracken was rearranged by him, and it was one of my other favorites to begin with.

I stumbled onto the homepage for him listed here and get message of hello. Nothing more. I remember the site from years ago. I have about 25 songs from Plams303 and would love to hear more, or know if he/she plans to come up with more aural candy like this.

If someone would care to e-mail me about it, I'd be greatly appreciated. Great song, download it, 'cause it's 100% worth it. So many others out there, but I can't find half of them anymore - people are missing out!

Sweet - arranged by Marcel Donné

Review by LMan, 23/03/2006

This is surely one of the very best remixes ever released, either at RKO or on any CD or anything else. The 80s synths style is predestined for this emotional SID tune. The background arpeggios softly pad the smooth lead sounds, and the sublte yet driving drums add drama to it all. Certainly a masterpiece and not to be missed.

Robocop3 (Gonna get you mad mix) - arranged by Mahoney

Review by quinch, 19/03/2006

I'm not sure what to make of this remix; on one hand, individually, the styles employed are good - very good, in fact. But together, they seem to be this… weird, amorphous mass that keeps tripping over itself as it stumbles toward the end. The execution is, as expected, excellent, but I cannot help but think that I would have liked the remix better if the singing, techno, guitar and other parts had been placed sequentially, rather than mixed together.

Dadelos - arranged by moog (Sebastian Bachliñski)

Review by LaLa, 18/03/2006

I really like the original SID by Reyn, it's so emotional, so powerful. So, I was looking forward to this remix.

In short: I really like it! The ethno-ambient mood is set from the first note, although I would've prefered a more washed-out piano in the intro. The pulsing, always moving base is lovely. I am a bit disappointed by the muffled lead, in fact, the only reason this remix is not getting the highest rating from me is because of that lead. A Yamaha CS-80 would work perfectly here, hint-hint.😉

But in every regard this remix is as close to perfection as possible, it really carries forward the emotional power of the original. And it's also of perfect length: it doesn't drag on, nor is it too short to get us in the mood. Or, shall I say, in the moog…
