Aztec Challenge (run of despair) - arranged by Andrea Baroni

Review by LMan, 24/02/2007

Parts of this arrangement are absolutely fantastic, others are a bit dissapointing. For instance, the guitar part at 1:43 should be much more bassy heavy (Rammstein esque), maybe an octave lower.

Some of the melody variations don't seem to work very well, because the original arrangement is so powerful - kind of disappointed anticipation.

Still - very good effort, only so close from being really outstanding.

Come Around (Turrican 2 - Level 1 Remix) - arranged by Remix Inc

Review by skyrunner, 04/02/2007

A nice idea to add lyrics and the guitars to the remix. But why didn't you add some FX like Reverb or Delay to the vocals??? They sound a little inappropriate while the guitar fits very well on the other hand. And basically the vocals are good. You clearly can sing.

You gave away a lot of potential with the vocals.

So average rating for the technical merit.

The idea is very good and I basically like the lyrics. Guitars are very good. The tune has a good range of variety and never gets boring.

A very good rating for the artistry.

The nostalgia is always difficult to judge I think.

With the added vocals its like a complete new tune but its still recognizeable.

Good rating for the Nostalgia.

Come Around (Turrican 2 - Level 1 Remix) - arranged by Remix Inc

Review by LMan, 02/02/2007

Bonus score for really great fun! This would work great as a soundtrack for a cheesy 80s Turrican movie. There's a great technical flaw though - the bass track is barely audible, or at times seems inaudible.

Advise: have someone help you do a proper mix / master of this tune, and this would be a real real winner!

FunKus - arranged by Dafunk

Review by LMan, 01/02/2007

Once again, Dafunk completely lives up to his name: this is pure funk. In this great arrangement, Dafunk combines old-school with modern elements, and includes bits and parts of the original SID sound here and there. Truly impressive!

Atmosphere (Touching the Sky) - arranged by Hazel

Review by LMan, 01/02/2007

Mostly well produced, but it seems to me that emptiness in the arrangement is attempted to be concealed by over-use of reverb. Still, pretty enjoyable bouncy tune.

Sonic Soul - arranged by JB

Review by LMan, 01/02/2007

Starts off lounge-esque, great ambience, choice of instruments and effects. Fantastic saxophone part.

Then, it suddenly morphs into a (rather ordinary) dance tune, and after a while back again. Flawless, professional production.

Moments of Everydayness - arranged by Markus Holler

Review by LMan, 01/02/2007

Very high marks on the artistic and technical scale, no doubt about the professionality behind this remix. On the other hand, it is also quite hard to enjoy - this is sophisticated music, not fit for casual listening.

TFX_Intro_Game_Remix_2_0 - arranged by damongp

Review by Jackal, 24/01/2007

Nice instruments, but drowned in reverb. Would have been nice to hear some remixing other than a straight transposition. If you were going to change the "3rd segment into rock, from techno, you should have gone all out, metallica style chugging guitars in the background, and a lead played to make your ears bleed… I'm touched that you felt the piece worthy enough to spend the time on…

Last Ninja - The Palace - arranged by Instant Remedy

Review by mythoslogos, 14/01/2007

Last Ninja - The Palace is a nice opening for Instant Remedy, a CD for those who love techno-trance arrangements. Some tracks in IR go on for too long, but overall sound-quality is nice, so what are you waiting for?

Sanxion / Thalamusic (Imposing Sanxions Mix) - arranged by Chris Abbott

Review by Tomsk, 09/01/2007

Still stands up strong today - mainly because of the excellent mixing of original SID with enhancements. First C64 remix tune I ever heard, and it made me quite emotional to hear those SID sounds blended into this mix. Will always have a soft spot for the highlight of this pioneering album

Comic Bakery (feat Hanna Kappelin & Morpheus) - arranged by o2

Review by omoroca, 28/11/2006

When I heard the names… o2, Marcel Donné and Mahoney, my (along with moog) overall favorite remixing guys (especially Donné, who is my god of c64 remixes); Hanna Kappelin, the very best singer in the c64 scene; Martin Galway, the best composer on the c64 (Yes, better than Hubbard!), with one of his best songs, Comic Bakery… I thought this remix must be sooo intergalactic - but then it wasn't.

It's still outstanding, though! Good work, guys!!! 😉

The last ninja - palace gardens (loader) - arranged by wk-one

Review by cyphax, 06/11/2006

Warning upfront: my favorite Remix64 track is Tonka's version of this same song. I'm also a big fan of the original SID. That puts the bar way up… well up there, quite high. Not all too fair perhaps, but c'est la vie.

This arrangement isn't bad. But I wouldn't wanna call it great either. So, it's average, hence the rating. Except nostalgia, cause it's very faithful to the original, that is a plus. What could wk-one do to make this better and rise above average?
Let's start off at the first 2 minutes: they're in desperate need of… shape. Shape? Shape. It's too plain right now, and it doesn't really have… well, shape. Or a face. You pick, it's all just terminology: download and listen to the song and it becomes clear in about 2 minutes what I'm trying to say. Fortunately, after these 2 minutes (you know what, it's actually 2:12, but that's for nitpickers) the song starts to show its true face ever so slightly, with drums and just generally more sound, more flair. Unfortunately it's still not convincing enough to blow you away or anything.

The way I see it, this is a fine foundation, but you have to build the house on top or you still end up without a roof over your head. If this is a first attempt, it's surely not bad at all. Just add some bells 'n whistles.

Myth Remix - arranged by Suvak Zajos

Review by Makke, 04/11/2006

I really like this from a technical stand point. Recreating those sounds on the Virus is very impressive.

However, the end result is too much like the original, and towards the end it sounds just like a crappy SID+drums effort remix/remake - something I just can't enjoy.

So while I admire Suvak's technical skills, the resulting remake just isn't that exciting. Frankly, I'd rather listen to the original.

I think Mr. Zajos should take those sounds he created for this remake, because they are absolutely brilliant, and use it in some original production of his. That would be awesome!

Review by beyond, 01/10/2006

Just heard this as I'm going through my collection of old remixes. I must say that I really like it and I agree with FLOAF (above). Produced in 2002, some of the sounds are maybe a bit tame, but others are very well put together. I like this!

Ultima IV - The Complete - arranged by chosc

Review by immacolata, 09/09/2006

My favourite Ultima-remixer must be chosc. Not a lot bother with this sound track. This remix is perhaps his best attempt. It sounds like he is gathering old attempts into a larger model, a potpourri. It is a nice task, since the original soundtracks are short tunes with no real connection between them save their medieval theme.

Bionic Commando (Tune 5) - arranged by Romeo Knight

Review by immacolata, 11/08/2006

Lovely. Just lovely. You can't help smiling and tapping your foot to the rhythm. It really catches the original melody awfully well, yet it sounds salsa like. Spanish guitar, some good percussion and tin drums. I love it when people remix songs in new styles without falling for novelty.

Shades (Mix) - arranged by o2

Review by omoroca, 10/08/2006

In my opinion, Shades is not only Hülsbeck's first but also his best song. No other Hülsbeck tune ever gave me goose bumps like this one does.

o2 captures the feeling of the tune and gives even more emotional strength to it. Well done! Great work!

Unreal ingame Turbo Galeazzi Cut - arranged by N-Joy of TsW

Review by REYN, 09/08/2006

Hi there…

I read some discussion if this tune was written by Charles or by me, but it is indeed written by me.

It was made in some really low-level machinecode-type music editor. Just like the MoN one on the C-64. I couldn't use more then 8kB for the music since the game was taking so musc space already. I only used a sample for the kick and the snare and the rest were self-generated waveforms.

So you know… Great work NJoy, nice to hear that tune again after so many years…

Cheers,

Reyn

Game Over - arranged by Westerling

Review by omoroca, 07/08/2006

I had always thought, playing the guitar can't be that difficult. Until Romeo Knight and most others who tried to play C64 music on the guitar gave me the impression that it's almost impossible to produce a good sound on the electric guitar unless you're Slash or Steve Stevens.

But Westerling gave me new hope! Keep on rocking, dude! 😉

Captured - arranged by Monty

Review by tamaha, 06/08/2006

The rework on Captured is outstanding (used to play the game a lot and the tune becomes a bit heavy to assimilate during loger sessions) and keeps the atmosphere as it was originally intended, without boring you when repeated. The metallic and dark sound style is also excellently treated.

Rolands Ratrace (The quest for Jarre) - arranged by Traxer

Review by immacolata, 01/08/2006

A rare remix of the much under-appreciated Roland's Rat Race sid, it self being a nice cover of the tv show's theme. This remix suffers a bit from the clichéd synth intro. Takes the author about one and a half minute to tell us how much he likes Jarre.

Once the introductory lull is over, I do believe the song picks up. I have rewritten a bit of this review, because upon several listenings, I tend to favour the tune more. Only niggle I have here is the drum track. Not that it is bad but I found that the song worked very well on its melodical parts and synths, no need for any artifical sweetener in shape of a drum track.

The overall impression is therefore that the song is a fair job, but intros is perhaps something the author should work on, at least to make them shorter. I still think it beats the a capella version by a long shot. More Roland remixes, however, and the best roland remix of the lot.

Gods Intro DaxxTRS Remix - arranged by daXX offline

Review by dream_19, 23/07/2006

At first I must admit, that this Tune was my favourite Amiga-Tune for years. So I was quite happy to see that finally someone made a new Remix. It was about time - and it's goood.

Richard Joseph's Original was mindblasting - this remix caches the epic style of the original tune and enhanced it. The echo of the GODS-Castle wide the rememberance, pumping beats and bass takes you forward through the castle.

I love that Remix. It's definitely the best one ever made of this Masterpiece. The only thing I miss is some kind of twist. But I don't want to be pedantic - great work!

Delta Ingame ('97 XG mix) - arranged by Chris Abbott

Review by hillsman, 06/07/2006

Obviously an arrangement rather than a remix, but when we're talking about Delta's in-game epic then this is definitely a good thing! I was blown away when I heard Hubbard's masterpiece almost 20 (!!) years ago and no SID is listened to more.

Chris' arrangement re-produces the original with impressive accuracy and is more than good enough to warrant repeated listening. My main complaint? A lack of power and impact during the opening minutes, particularly the baseline. Addressing this would make it perfect for me.

Love the string section at the end though - great arrangement overall!

Bubble Bobble (Live!) - arranged by Hampshire Regional High School

Review by wishbone, 06/07/2006

Now this is damn funny. I wonder how it got made. Maybe the band conductor is a C64 fan. This is the kind of stuff that just doesn't happen, because getting that many ordinary people (not that we C64 fans are all complete freaks) to play C64 tunes is all but impossible.

One thing noone have mentioned is that this is not just a remix of Bubble Bobble, but also of New Zealand Story. I think this is important since it is the ONLY New Zealand Story remix at RKO, although hard to find since all its information relates to Bubble Bobble only.
