Terra Cresta Remix - arranged by Razmo

Review by lagerfeldt, 28/02/2004

It's not that often a remix is on par with the original, often missing essential ingredients of the original in terms of atmosphere, groove, etc.

It's extremely rare to see a remix improve on the original, or add original elements that can stand alone.

I feel Razmo's remix of Terra Cresta is one of those very rare occasions.

It succeeds in terms of both atmosphere, technical merit, and especially originality.

The robotic intro speak is a real nice touch that sets the scene right away, and builds up perfectly for the first introduction of the main beat.

My favourite parts are actually not in the original SID, at 1:49 min. & 3:11 min., a new theme by Razmo that really rocks my socks off. Yeah!

Mixing is excellent with nice balancing, though a tad too much reverb and slightly muddy eq makes clarity suffer a bit, compared to commercial quality, mind you..

More please!

This deserves a much higher ranking!

Family (Hard n Heavy) - arranged by LMan

Review by lagerfeldt, 11/02/2004

I absolutely love this Huelsbeck song. Oooh, the memories.

This rather sweet remake by LMan has a sorta mid 1980's sound (like a TV-series), mainly due to the piano theme and the drum machine sounds, I think. A perfect fit for a family show.. hm, maybe that's the title clue?

Starts out with a really nice slow atmospheric intro, and then progresses with the piano theme, and finally a guitar solo.

Nice mix with plenty of reverb.

My only reservation is the guitar sound, which would have benefitted from being a real guitar instead of a keyboard sound (although the programming sounds real enough). Oh, and the piano seems a bit artificial in the programming (perhaps too rigid quantizing?).

Thumbs up! Very nostalgic for me

Cauldron II - I am a Pumpkin Man - arranged by trauma

Review by lagerfeldt, 17/08/2003

A highly original production, perhaps *the* most original on RKO.

It's quite a surprise once the beat starts but it all works better than could be expected, although after the first high point it never reaches another climax.

Top marks for originality, something which lifts this remix above most other songs on RKO.

Finally the remix seems to perfectly capture the untangible madness of a lunatic getting more and more insanely frustrated (a situation we all can relate to when trying to beat a monstrously difficult game at 3 am in the morning).

Scroll Machine (5th Dream About Happiness) - arranged by LMan

Review by lagerfeldt, 21/07/2003

Another super cool remix by LMan da man. This times it's a remix of a somewhat unknown SID by Yip of Pure Byte, though one of my all-time favourites. The original SID is quite distinctive and very original in many different respects.

The remix features the drum loop made famous by Prodigy on their Music for the Jilted Generation album (track 8, Poison). It's a well wicked loop and doesn't detract from the remix to say the least, it fits perfectly.

Even the lead sound in this remix is a bit borrowed from Prodigy (or Chemical Brothers in fact) but again it's not an issue as the song itself is miles away from said inspiration sources.

Some nice breaks and bits keep the mix from getting repetitive, and as in many of LMan's other remixes the humour simply shines through.

Overall a superb remix but perhaps you need to know or listen to the original SID first in order to appreciate the music a bit more.

International Karate (LManic Chop Suey Club Mix) - arranged by LMan

Review by lagerfeldt, 21/07/2003

Great remix by LMan. Very club oriented with a beat & bass that just pumps & jumps. The bass is a very 80's synth bass sounding a bit like a Juno-106 perhaps. The flow is particularly good with a nice quick build up and some very important breakdowns and instant beat return points that are quite refreshing and sometimes even manage to surprise a bit.

The most important thing about this remix is the very obvious humour that is present everywhere. From the in-your-face samples of fighting to the more subtle constant bounce of the whole remix which gives it a very light & bubbly texture.

Thumbs up!

Delta Hiscore (Mann im Mond Mix) - arranged by ifadeo

Review by lagerfeldt, 21/07/2003

The title "Mann im Mond" is perhaps a reference to the space setting of Delta, otherwise it's lost on me since the remix iteself doesn't have any particular sound to it that otherwise explains the title. In fact this is hardly a remix in the truest sense, more a 1:1 remake of the original Rob Hubbard theme.

The technical impression is above average with nice panorama spacing, judicial use of reverb, and a soft but bouncy bass line sound. The drums are slightly annoying however, with a micro zap acting as closed hi hat dub, a somewhat phasing kick drum and a standard 606/808 type gated reverb snare drum. The major niggle however, is the lead sound which is a bit weedy sine tone which lacks some intensity and presence in the mix. Perhaps a choice of a more pronounced lead synth would have added a lot to the overall impression of this rendition in order to highten the initial impact.

Since this is a 1:1 cover version not much original stuff has been added to the song, no new themes or change of underlying chords - even the arrangement progression or arpeggiator synth haven't been tingled with. Merely sporadic use of some phasing and panning effects thrown in for good measure.

I feel a remix should always add something or change the perspective of the song in order to justify itself.

The overall impression is that of a technical adequate remake that doesn't add anything new to a classic tune. Not bad just lacking originality.
