We do not have a national ID card scheme in the UK (yet), so we still require passports to leave the country (and to get back again).

That's for not voting yes to the Schengen-agreement, I guess :)

The full Schengen members are Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden (but not Ireland and the United Kingdom) plus Iceland and Norway (which are not EU members).

BUT IT IS A GOOD THING TO BRING YOUR PASSPORT ANYHOW. If you get in some kind of trouble (you can never know), a passport is so much better to have than some non-EU ID card.
