Remix a tune in the style of Black Flag/Rollins Band

Post by Waz »

That's my new challenge to any remixer :)

Basically, for those of you who haven't heard of Black Flag, they were one of the most inspiration punk/hardcore bands of the early 1980s, whom after a few releases just so happened to have the godlike genius of Henry Rollins on vocal duties. Think fast paced style, lots of guitar feedback, 200mph pace and full-on Rollins (much like he still is today).

Or if that's too fast for you, try the style of Rollins Band (which Henry formed after Black Flag split up) if you dare!

Bleh, The Pistols and Stiff Little Fingers for me.

Only Black Flag song I can remember is T.V. Party. Is that what they usually sound like?
Great, another set of strings ruined...

Sometimes, yes, sometimes a bit more hardcore and faster!

Mind you, I love the version of TV Party Rollins Band did for the CD "Rise Above". That CD rocks, with lots of people helping out with vocal duties on versions of Black Flag songs, including Iggy Pop, Lemmy, Ice T, Mike Patton, guys from Slayer, Queens of the Stone Age, Slipknot etc. And Rollins himself of course, naturellement:

Anyway, any remix done in that sort of punk style (a la that 720 degrees remix) would be nice to hear. Hell, I'm even volunteering to do a Henry Rollins-like vocal for anyone interested, that's how much I'd like to see it.

I think the problem is the difficulty of getting anywhere-near-realistic guitar if you're not a guitarist. And if you get a guitarist, you have record said guitarist, etc, etc. Wavetable still doesn't really cut it. Hence the relative lack of guitar covers, except by people who can actually play!

Now if they were a SYNTH punk band... ;-)

Waz - or how about a C64 song a la Wire? (Two members of which performed Heartbeat with Big Black.)

Whoops, forgot about that. I filled it out, but my computer is now out of action. Since I can't be arsed to fill it out twice, you'll have to wait until I've gotten the old girl set up again. Sorry about my inherant laziness.

But back to the topic, its all very well talking about doing a remix in that style, but the problem lies with finding a suitable SID tune. 720 Degrees was perfectly chosen, but I can't think of any more. Only the boss theme from Blasteroids springs to mind. I had a go at that once, with downtuned guitars, lots and lots of distortion and a string break ending. Absolutely the most dreadful noise I've ever created. More grunge than punk though.

Well, any good SID suggestions would help.

SID suggestions like you asked, Mandrian:

/VARIOUS/M-R/PRI/Death_Metal.sid
/Hubbard_Rob/Skate_or_Die_intro.sid (still no one's done a good enough mix of this one!!)
/Hubbard_Rob/Arcade_Classics.sid
/Yip/Netherworld.sid
/Hatlelid_Kris/Grand_Prix_Circuit.sid
/VARIOUS/A-F/Fanta/Hat_Trick_4Fanta.sid
/VARIOUS/S-Z/Tonka/Aggresso-Hubbard.sid

I'll try and think of some more too...

Oh, I've been wanting to remix Grand Prix Ciruit for a while now. I had planned more of a Devo synth-rock sound for that one though. When My comp gets fixed up, who knows?

Edit: Checked that lot out. "Aggresso-Hubbard" by Tonka... Wow. I think I've found a new favourite SID. Might give that one a go some time in the future. :D

Inspite of me thinking of Rollins as a genious I never really got into the music that much, I'm mostly into the spoken stuff...

To quote from Boris: "On two concert I'm should collected photo but such small fat baldheaded technologist be insane!"
