C64 Christmas

Christmas Special Editorial: 20 years of RKO (The charts revisited)

Published: 24/12/2020 by Neil Carr

In the year 2000 Jan Lund Thomsen's RKO (remix.kwed.org) was born. Finally, a resource that enabled remixers to uploaded their remixes for the world to enjoy. Before that time the remixing scene were made up of several websites spread around the internet. Finding these sites and jumping around from one to another was a painful and a somewhat chaotic experience. Over the years RKO would establish itself to be the one stop shop to get your c64 remix fix. In this Christmas editorial special we go back through the years and present the top 3 remixes voted by our readers from each year to the current day. So grab a cuppa sit back and enjoy whilst we take you on a nostalgia trip. Oh! and if you haven't voted yet on these remixes here's a chance to do so. Happy Christmas everyone.

Huge shout-out to Linus "Kingfisher" Walleij who ran the Triad MP3z site for approximately two years before RKO was launched. Triad MP3z also accepted remix submissions from the public, so rather than split the scene in two sites, I showed him an early version of RKO and he generously supported my efforts to launch a replacement rather than a competitor. Also, we must not forget that C64Audio.com predates both Triad MP3z and RKO. Even though Chris' site didn't take submissions from remixers, it still provided plenty of free remixes for people to enjoy. As such it was an instrumental part of the remix scene. I can safely say that without Chris and Linus we wouldn't have RKO today.

Still many favs from the early days get plenty of airplay in my car. Nice to look back to a simpler and less commercial time for C64 remixes.

“Less commercial”? There’s hardly ANY commercial releases these days - and during recent years those have mostly been crowdfunded, since the overlap between C64 fans and people who don’t mind supporting the arts has become even smaller.

People, we should considder ourselves lucky to be part of a community diverse enough to cover everything from the solitary hobbyist with a copy of Fruityloops to an 80-piece symphonic orchestra. The solitary remixer can afford to be out of pocket on a remix since the music isn’t his/her day job - the professional musician doesn’t have that luxury. Dismissing one over the other isn’t a way to take the hobby in new directions. If you prefer the freely available renditions, that’s fine by me - but don’t knock commercial efforts simply for having a cost. No one is in this to get rich.

A mammoth effort to put this together, no doubt.. So, thank you for doing this, Neil!! Speaking AS "A professional musician"; of course some people are in this to get rich.. or at the very least, to make money from it. To think or say otherwise is naive & simple-minded. Swallowing a little less of the 'poor' promoter's propaganda and paying more attention to what's actually going on, might result in a slightly more insightful viewpoint and a few less 'snarky' and undeserved comments. Misdirection is the greatest gift an illusionist possesses and if you're too busy watching the lips move, you're not seeing what the hands are doing...
